✴ BACKTAGGING: I am basically always down to back tag and if not, will make sure to notify you (and would appreciate the same for record keeping purposes).
✴ FOURTHWALLING: IDK how that’d happen since this is an OC, but if you think of a way, ask me first I guess?
✴ THREADHOPPING: Usually okay in network posts or if you’re just putting in a character reaction. If you’re unsure, feel free to ask!
✴ OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS: I don’t really have any if they’re IC? Just let me know if you’re concerned or put in a TW. I will be doing the same with any sensitive subjects.
✴ PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Up to kissing is fine I guess? Though I would appreciate a heads up. As for how she’d react, she might be a bit uncomfortable if it’s a stranger but she generally won’t get violent unless it’s sexual harassment or something like that.
✴ PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Oh my god genuinely feel free to fuck her up. She will start fighting back after a point but go feral if that’s what you want to do. Just talk to me if you want to try and kill her?
✴ RELATIONSHIPS: I’m open to shipping m/f and f/f with Coraline, though it can honestly take me a while before I start shipping anything. So uh, basically if it starts naturally going there I’m down. I will give Coraline ineffectual crushes from time to time also. Just no smut not because I think it’s icky or I’m above it or whatever, but because I am incapable of writing it without wanting to crawl out of my skin from embarrassment at how bad it probably is on my end.

☗ Opt-out

✴ BACKSTORY TWS: Her backstory has themes of child abuse (emotional and physical), unhealthy/codependent relationships, death of a parent, and suicide attempts. If you want me to stay away from any of those, please let me know.
✴ GENERAL TWS: Stuff that can come up in threads include body horror/gore (though there isn’t blood), self-harm, the usual stuff that comes with depression/anxiety/PTSD, and dissociation. Let me know what you want me to stay away from.
✴ POWERS: Her powers can be invasive both passively and actively. The former from her senses as she can “see” into other’s bodies/vaguely pick up stuff if they’re radiating energy. The latter because she can manipulate the darkness within the body. Both are unlikely to come up as she hates (and is usually sealed off from) doing the in body stuff, but if you want to make sure it never happens, just let me know.
✴ INTERACTION: Basically if you don’t want me to talk to you, try and thread with you, add you on plurk, or whatever. Please let me know, no reason needed. I mean, I would like to know why so I can try and fix the issue/behavior but I’m not gonna track you down or whatever.

☗ First Impressions

✴ VISUAL: Stands at a height of 5'2”. A bit too slim and delicate looking, but still athletic. Pale. She has minor acne scarring on her cheeks, a burn scar on her left wrist, and a faint scar on her right knee. There is also a surgical scar on her chest similar to that from open heart surgery.
With the illusion charm off: Skin is a dark grey with prominent black veins, especially in the eyes. Tends to give others a sense of instinctual wrongness. Has no life signs. Spell glyph on her tongue. Unhealed, messy incision on her chest.
Images
✴ FASHION: Casual comfy. Tops tend to be oversized. Wears a lot of black and keeps as much of her skin covered as possible. Wears a black fabric face mask and thin leather gloves when it’s bright outside. Is basically always wearing sunglasses.
✴ DEMEANOUR: Nervous and reserved, but friendly enough if approached. Her eyes show an inner strength and badly hidden curiosity. She is either Very Still or Constantly Fidgeting with zero in between.
✴ SOUND: Generic American with hints of uptalk that worsens when she gets flustered. Will over emphasize that and shift to full valley girl to annoy others. Tends to speak loudly when excited or otherwise not paying attention to her volume. Knows extremely basic Chinese and speaks it with an American accent. Kind of sounds like Lana Condor.
✴ SCENT: Neutrogena Hydro Boost, and various other scents from her: hair oil, cuticle oil, lip balm, and body butter. She usually tries to coordinate but also can stop caring. Outside of that, whatever fabric she’s wearing and generic human underneath that with the illusion on. Without? Nothing. Void.
✴ MENTAL INFORMATION: A strong telepath may be able to glean the occasional surface thought off of her with major interference, but any deeper and it quickly becomes alien/eldritch/she’s a void creature. So if a character is used to that they may be able to parse more info, but otherwise, it’d probably be dangerous to most. She also doesn’t Sense things in a traditional manner so if a telepath is trying to access that, it may also be hard.
✴ MAGICAL INFORMATION: First thing is an extremely complicated and powerful illusion charm. Wrapped through and under that are (3) layers of intricate sealing spells. Those two things together basically create a magic mesh that does a pretty good job of hiding what’s underneath: Void. Just a terrifying amount of Void/Darkness, however your character would interpret that.

CHARACTER INFO
Character Name: Coraline Li
Age: 19
Canon: Original

World Description: Generic modern world where superheroes and villains are constantly fighting for control. Magic, supernatural creatures, meta genes, fantastical technology? All can be found here.
HMD: Link

History: Coraline’s story (like most people’s) starts at birth, where due to either fate or chance, she was stolen from the hospital to be used in a ritual meant to bring upon the end of the world as most knew it. Except she was saved, the police crashed in, interrupting it and foiling their plans of summoning the Primordial Void through the baby sleeping in the middle of a spell circle. The cultists were all captured and the kidnapped child was unharmed.

So after the usual media circus that happens after such an event, life went on. Her single mother moved from New York to escape the attention and traumatizing memories, ending up across the country in Los Angeles. There, she had a normal childhood. Kind of. She was diagnosed with sensory processing disorder early on, with a marked sensitivity to lights and lack of sensitivity for nearly everything else. Including pain. In short, she was a very clumsy child who had trouble communicating. But hey, occupational therapy and dance classes made sure she stopped tripping over everything at least. Other than that? Perfectly normal. She attended school, switched from dance to martial arts, temporarily got an abusive almost-stepfather, and made one friend. All the usual things.

Then, she turned 14. Turns out, the ritual did do something to her: It gave her powers. And inspired by a near death experience where she was saved by one plus a desire for praise, she decided she would become a superhero with them. She joined a local organization where her skills were further honed. Physically at least. Her powers inspired mistrust among most heroes, with similar powers being used exclusively by villains in the past. Still, she worked hard until she finally got a chance to prove herself at 17, saving a bunch of people from falling debris on live television! Unfortunately, that gained the attention of the very same cult that had taken her on the day she was born. They stole her away once more, injuring her mother in the process. Next thing she knew, she was being monologue’d at about her purpose in bringing the end of the world and all that. Pretty similar to the first kidnapping all things considered. Except this time, she died. Sacrificed in an attempt to free the thing that had been put inside her.

They succeeded, the dark void within her bursting free and consuming her. The cult stood triumphant, and her best friend got to watch her die. Except, nobody accounted for the possibility that maybe, the thing had merged with the human it had been put inside (or perhaps, there was never truly a person at all). So, she awakens as something distinctly inhuman and with the knowledge that she is something terrible, confirming everything she’s ever feared about herself.

They proceeded to disguise her appearance and lied to the police about what happened, saying she escaped on her own and has no idea where the culprits are (dead). She then finds out her mom died which is. A lot. She ends up getting taken in by her best friend’s family and after a grieving period, goes back to school. She does her best to pretend nothing happened, but she starts withdrawing, quitting anything not required including her superheroics. Any moment not spent studying was spent developing her suddenly wild powers, gaining as much control as possible so she wouldn’t accidently hurt anyone. Otherwise, she was placed under a seal that left her sluggish and slow. But hey, she wouldn’t be hurting anyone. As long as she didn’t draw attention, it’d be fine. Only Normal from now on. Ignore that she died and doesn’t even have the same senses anymore. Only Normal.

She ended up enrolling in college with an undeclared major. Unknowingly, she was returning to her place of birth: New York City. Despite her fear, her stubbornness won out (besides, the cult’s definitely gone this time. Right?). So she’s in NYC now. Trying to be a Normal freshman. Except now? She has better control over her abilities and stuff keeps happening. Stuff that she could theoretically prevent, or at least help with. And isn’t she basically letting it happen if she does nothing? So, she ended up starting again, tentatively building up a kit.

Then, Leon gets kidnapped by the same fucking cult (I swear this is the last time). Coraline tracks them down, fully aware that she’s being led into a trap. This time, Leon is the one that gets monologue’d at (though she misses most of it). From what she understands, they’re trying to force her friend into doing… something with the sword they’re now holding. Also apparently some form of her friend masterminded this whole thing, including what happened to her. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, Leon is forced to use the sword, and next thing she knows, they’re turning towards her and acting… different. Like themselves still, but more somehow. They gather “their followers”, thanking them for a job well done and… yeah. They kill Coraline. So now she’s here.

Death: Betrayed and killed by their best friend. Fun times.

What are your plans for this character in-GPSL? I’m just here to come back and vibe tbh.

What aspects of this GPSL and/or its setting are you most interested in having this character engage with? The vibes, plot, exploration, etc.

How does your character generally get along with other people? Pretty well? Her MO is to not rock the boat as much as possible and fade into the background so she’ll usually go along with anything up to a point. Once that point is reached, she’ll get stubborn.

What is your character's mental state upon entering the GPSL? Betrayed, pissed, sad. Not good in general tbh.

Skills/Abilities:
  • Darkness Manipulation: She can mold and change the properties of the darkness around her rather effortlessly. This allows novel ways of attacking, defending, and transportation through the use of her constructs. Touching the constructs gives others a shock of extreme cold that soon fades to just feeling wrong.

Nerfs: Increased sensitivity to the light present.

  • Inhuman Physiology: Her body is largely made up of darkness/shadow stuff (the exact nature of this existence is debatable. Is she puppeting flesh? Is it shadows given form via magic? I have no idea.) Due to this, everything about her has a grey, blackish tint to it, belying her now inhuman nature. She can take much more damage than before due to a deadened sense of pain, the ability to seal her wounds with darkness, and just a lack of bodily functions. This means she does not need to eat or drink and is immune to biological poison/diseases. She can also use the shadows within her body to augment her speed and strength.

Nerfs: Occasionally requires food for energy. Not immune to whatever the mods want to throw at her. Destroying the brain and/or heart will “kill” her.

  • Regeneration: Coraline is capable of using darkness to heal herself, essentially using shadows to stitch herself back together, resetting her body to its “original” form.

Nerfs: Healing speed is decreased and discomfort is increased. Increased amount of time incapacitated.

  • Darkness Sense: Coraline is able to sense anything happening in the shadows/darkness around her, with precision depending on shadow density and concentration. At its most basic, she can “see” shapes and feel general energy emissions. Her usual distance is at around 50 ft. (she may be able to push it out a little further or reign it in but both takes concentration), though in continuous shadow/darkness, it can extend as far as that covers. Her senses are able to detect through solids. However, to prevent invasions of privacy and also to stop herself from being overwhelmed, most of this is usually sealed off via magic (further info in items section).

Nerfs: Range reduced to whatever range the lanterns/torches are. Unable to unlock the third seal.

  • Dark Form: She is no longer bound to human form, able to turn into a living shadow that can become incorporeal at will. This greatly increases her “physical” capabilities, including her regeneration. On a lesser level, she is able to “meld” into existing shadows as a form of camouflage.

Nerfs: Increased light sensitivity and reduced regeneration speed.

  • General Skills: Coraline has been trained in martial arts (mostly wing chun and aikido based), making her a proficient hand to hand combatant. She is also capable in using the staff and glaive. She is skilled in parkour and has also learned basic first aid.
Flaws/Weaknesses:
  • Darkness Manipulation: Constructs are susceptible to light, as it causes them to dissolve away. Higher intensities of light require more concentration for her to maintain her constructs. She also can’t create darkness from nothing, requiring a source of some sort, but can “expand” an existing source.

  • Inhuman Physiology: Damage tends to build up quickly as the wounds aren’t actually healed, the shadows simply acting as a very effective band aid. And since her existence in reality is tied to her form, if it becomes too damaged, she’ll theoretically be permanently destroyed. Hence, it’s in her best interest to reduce damage taken. Also, she can no longer sleep and is sensitive to the light, requiring her to keep herself covered up to avoid discomfort/pain. At night, she can usually uncover herself with little irritation provided the lights aren’t too bright. She also lacks a pulse, doesn’t breathe unless required for talking, and basically has no life signs.

  • Regeneration: The speed of the process depends on the density of the ambient darkness. Greater damage also requires higher darkness density. It also strains at the magic binding her to reality, so healing greater amounts of damage is very uncomfortable and may leave her weak and incapacitated for some time after. Clothing is also not affected.

  • Darkness Sense: Her traditional senses are now dulled or even completely lacking, the latter referring to her vision. She is unable to traditionally see things, fully relying on her new senses on that end. This means she’s basically colorblind and her “vision” acuity depends largely on ambient light levels (though she has found some work arounds when it comes to say walking down the street).

  • Dark Form: Light becomes extremely dangerous in this form, causing extreme pain/discomfort. Enough exposure will kill her. She is also rather unwilling to use this ability and usually keeps it sealed off.

  • Other: Personality wise, Coraline can be rather rash when others are in danger. Her stubbornness can also cause conflicts. Her anxiety/low self-esteem/desire for no attention means she can be a bit of a doormat and bystander. She fears her powers going out of control, the concept of Fate/Destiny in general due to hers being one of destruction, and losing those she loves (though that one’s come true now). Her mother and former best friend are people that would be great sources of weakness.
Personality: At first glance, Coraline comes off as a rather shy and timid person. That isn’t necessarily a false impression. Early experiences with bullying made it hard for her to personally reach out to others. She preferred to gain attention by making herself useful or praiseworthy (aka she was a major teacher’s pet), though that later backfired so she now does her very best to just seem mediocre and unforgettable (her success at this is up in the air). Basically, she has a lot of anxiety when it comes to social situations (and just situations in general), and when she doesn’t feel comfortable, she tends to be rather quiet and can be a bit of a doormat. Not to say she isn’t capable of interacting with others. She’s had years of practice, learning to compartmentalize parts of herself and using “scripts” to guide interactions as necessary.

She also possesses a deep vein of self-loathing and a pretty big guilt complex started by her almost-stepfather’s emotional abuse and the previously mentioned bullying. The former made it clear how much of a burden she was on her mother, the latter made it clear that something was intrinsically wrong with her (not that she hasn’t heard similar from doctors and even her own mother). That only got reinforced when her powers manifested, as she was immediately treated with suspicion, the constant underlying message being that her abilities are intrinsically evil. Then, when she tried to prove the world wrong, she got her mom killed. One can’t forget the whole being told you’re supposed to destroy the world thing either. The way she sees it, the least she can do in exchange for existing is use her powers to help others, and if it turns out she can’t exist? She’s perfectly willing to die.

With all that, one would think she is the type of person to isolate herself, refusing all attempts for friendship. That is the furthest from the truth, because her biggest fear in the end is loneliness. For her, it represents all her fears of herself coming true. As one can imagine, this conflicts frequently with the whole “don’t get attention” thing, since making friends requires putting oneself out there. There’s also the fact that the two sides of her life can’t mix, meaning she’s rarely able to truly trust anyone if only for their own protection. So when she does manage to make a true connection, she’s willing to do and put up with a lot to keep it.

Still, she has her limits (though they’re much greyer than many would expect) and once her lines are crossed, she will put her foot down. This is when her stubbornness really comes through, as she will refuse to compromise or shift, even if it’d be beneficial to do so. Indeed, once her opinion is formed on anyone or thing, it can be extremely hard to change it. This, combined with the things mentioned above can lead to startling moments of impulsivity. If someone else is in trouble or a friend is being attacked, she will leap in without a thought.

Outside of all her hang-ups, Coraline is a person with massive amounts of enthusiasm and determination. She is also extremely curious with a love of exploring ideas and boundaries, making her a rather creative thinker. Once she sets her mind on learning or doing something, she will pursue it with her all, pushing herself and it to the limits. Indeed, this is the other source of impulsivity: coming across something that interests her can easily override her usual barriers, for good or for ill. It should also be noted she is quintessential Gen Z, molded by the internet and social media. Basically? Expect a lot of memes.

In the end, she is someone who can be defined by her compassion and idealism. She finds great joy in helping and making others happy. This is especially true for those she loves, as she is willing to go to the ends of the earth for them whether they deserve it or not. She just loves people as a whole and despite flashes of pessimism due to her anxiety, she is an optimist at heart. Coraline truly believes in the overall good and endless potential of humanity (+ other sentient beings) with a rarely dampened ferocity, and she will do anything she can do protect that.

Items: Choker: Posses an illusion charm that allows her to appear human/alive as well as 3 levels of sealing spells:
  • 1st : Prevents unconscious/super reactive activation of her abilities.
  • 2nd : Prevents her senses from going through solid objects and keeps them at normal range. Also locks her Dark Form, though she is able transform up to around a limb with heavy concentration.
  • 3rd : Limits the acuity of her senses, preventing her from seeing down to a molecular level and locks her teleportation ability. (This one’s just going to be unlockable as a nerf).
Also street clothes (with a hole in the chest) and a collapsible/telescoping staff.

Character Name: Coraline Li
Age: 22
World Information: Here it is. Sorry it’s a bit of a mess. The only change I’m making is shifting the timeline of events a bit back so that “current” is at 2025.
Character Information:

There was definitely a learning curve, and she somehow found herself recruited to work part-time at a boutique that totally wasn’t a front for a Hero Costume Crafter, but… things were becoming okay again (ignoring some big hiccups).

Now? She’s 22. Freshly graduated with a bachelor in social work. Ready to take on the world… or at least her gap year. Because she knows she needs to make a choice soon. Not just with grad school, but about her other life so to speak. Because she’s powerful, no matter how much she’d prefer not to be. And that can’t be hidden for long. Time’s running out. Life choices aside, she is now working full time at said Normal boutique that somehow pays a living wage in NYC and continues to wrestle with her sense of self.

She just hopes that her friends are right about the whole destiny thing.

Extended Bio

Note: This is not meant to be well written or a pretty read. It's just all relevant info put on a page as succinctly as I could.

TW: child abuse, unhealthy/codependent relationships, death, depression, suicide attempts

Birth/Childhood

Born to a single mother whose father bounced once he realized he doesn’t want a kid and also hates taking responsibility for his actions. Was chosen by the cult as 1 of the kids that fit the criteria, kidnapped ASAP after birth, and taken to the ritual site. Ritual started except with the aid of an operative focusing on magical cults, the police busts in and interrupts the thing before it’s finished. This left a seemingly untouched baby who was taken back to the mother. Mom no longer felt safe in her city of birth and was also sick of the media attention so she ends up moving the family of 2 to LA near some extended family that helped set them up.

Quickly realized there’s something wrong with the kid developmentally, especially when she became a toddler. Highlights include very light sensitive, little control over limbs, seems to barely feel pain, and just little response to most stimuli. Gets diagnosed with Autism + Sensory Processing Disorder and is put in therapy for those things, concentrating on helping her process the world better/communication (this is where she first started learning ASL)? Also movement therapies that led to dance classes when it was recommended to help her make friends. She soon lost the autism diagnosis as once the sensory shit started being addressed, it was clear that was the root of basically all her issues, and that was very slowly improving on its own. The majority of the therapy finished when she was 7.

Still had trouble making friends, partially due to the weirdness from her SPD, partially because she just gave off the vaguest sense of Offness that adults usually manage to push past (animals are also usually not a big fan of her). Even though she’s mostly “normal” by 7, she has been cemented as The Weird Kid and now finds herself alone most of the time. Attempts to approach others usually end pretty badly, and her main interactions are with teachers so she quickly becomes a teacher’s pet. At around this time, she convinces her mom to let her quit dance class due to the bullying and switched to martial arts because wow cool! Mom was down for that because learning to defend yourself is always great.

Her mom then meets a man and they start going out. She Does Not Like Him and tries to tell her mother, but of course she’s rebuffed because Coraline doesn’t actually have a solid reason. The dude tries to win her over for a bit, but soon starts subtlety abusing her whenever her mother was away from work (which happened a lot). Coraline tries to tell her mom again, but she is once again not believed due to a lack of concrete evidence on her side.

It’s in 4th grade that she makes her first friend, a transfer student by the name of Leon. On one hand, she doesn’t get the best vibes off of him. On the other hand, someone her age wants to friends for once and man is she desperate. As one can imagine, the relationship definitely had an unhealthy dynamic, punctuated by moments of genuine friendship such as when they helped come up with the plan that revealed her mom’s now fiancé’s true colors. Said plan culminated in Coraline getting punched in the face in front of her mom. Worth it. This continues until the beginning 8th grade where Leon manipulated a potential friend to attempt suicide. Coraline finally puts her foot down on their treatment of herself and others. The massive fight ends in Coraline ignoring them until they apologize, and Leon being like “yup that’s fine”. The mutual ignoring lasts until partway through the summer before high school, and surprisingly, it’s Leon that caves. She accepts the apology and they start hanging out again, though she makes sure they know if this sort of fucked up shit happens again, she’s out.

Highschool

Coraline is now going to high school. She has a lot of trouble making friends just in class and such, but manages to make some connections through color guard (she was interested in the dance team before realizing it’s mostly made up of people that hate her). She and Leon and slowly building up trust again, and she ends up accompanying his family on their spring break vacation to a cabin in the “wilderness”. Barely 2 nights pass and Leon accidently summons a malevolent otherworldly creature that they have to chase down and banish. During this, her powers activate in a moment of need and they finally manage to get rid of the thing. They both decide to keep their respective abilities a secret, and the events help to (nearly) fully repair their relationship.

And soon, freshman year ends. Coraline is dragged along by a friend to a parkour group and she fucking loves it, learning as quickly as they’ll teach her (the rare movement glitch aside). Her first time actually scaling a building, said glitch occurs and she loses her footing, nearly falling to her death. But she’s saved by a local superhero and she suddenly realizes that she can do that! She can help people (and get that sweet validation)! So with the help of her BFF, she manages to track down a local org and convinces them to let her join. Unfortunately, it’s because any who had powers similar to her have all been villains, so they want to keep an eye on her. They still train her of course, helping her gain more control over her abilities in a purely defensive manner and improving her physical fighting ability. But the attitude still carries over in interactions, especially among the few other teen heroes and she once again finds herself the odd one out. But she’s nothing if not stubborn, and just keeps working hard, trying to prove she’s trustworthy. And life moves on. Student by day, superhero trainee by night, occasional member of an idol dance cover group.

She finally gets her chance at 17 during a particularly disastrous battle, and manages to save some civilians from falling debris on live TV! Very cool. Unfortunately, this gets the attention of The Cult who manages to track her down and kidnap her from her home, killing her mother in the process. She wakes up in another fucking warehouse, abilities sealed and tied down in another spell circle. Gets told to her face she’s a mistake and killing her will hopefully release the thing that’s inside her. What’s the thing? A force of destruction that will help end the world as they know it! And then, she dies, her heart carved out of her chest right as her BFF gets there.

She gets consumed by the Darkness Within, but instead of being mentally obliterated, she wakes up. Still herself. Kind of. Leon and The Cult are fighting, and her first attempt to defend her friend ends in death. She then watches Leon kill the rest. This, combined with her suddenly new Senses and boost in power = panicking. Leon’s also kind of panicking. No one’s having a good time. They finally calm down enough to come up with a plan. First, adapt the spell the cult had used to seal her and replace in on her. It takes a couple of tries because too strong and she’s literally unable to move, but they finally get it (at least to the point she can walk). Second part? Illusion spell. Third part? Lie to the police! The story is she managed to escape on her own, and found she was close to Leon’s place so ran there for help.

They take her statement and she finds out her mom actually died. She is taken in by Leon’s family, and they come up with a plan to help her get control over her powers. Basically, they’ll help her practice as well as continue to refine the sealing and illusion spells that later get tied to the choker she wears everywhere. The police investigation goes nowhere and she tries to kill herself a couple of times, failing each time and racking up enough damage that she finds out about the whole regeneration thing. With no way out on that end, Coraline starts to withdraw socially and professionally. She quits her extracurriculars, quits the superhero org (that was a bit hard but she manages to convince them she had her powers taken during the whole kidnapping thing), and finishes her high school career trying to be the most boring student ever.

College

She ends up getting into NYU with a scholarship, though the real reason she chose that school was to be close to Leon who got accepted to Columbia that bastard. There, she continues on her goal to be the most boring student after and quickly realizes she has 0 idea what she wants to do with her life. Outside of that, she continues to ignore her abilities beyond what’s necessary to get control over them. Just don’t think about how she can’t sleep and doesn’t technically feel things anymore. It’s so bad she has to go through student services to get various accessibility services because on particularly bright days? “Seeing” becomes a bit of an issue. Thank god for that SPD diagnosis.

After one year of dorming, she and Leon move into a shitty apartment together and life goes on. Except she’s starting to get control over her powers? And there’s always so many things going wrong in NYC, things she can help stop. So she starts going out again, tentatively building up a kit. They gather “their followers”, thanking them for a job well done and Coraline readies herself to die once more, betrayed. Except Leon turns their magic onto what’s left of the cult, passing out when whatever they did finished, forcing Coraline to quickly drag them out of the suddenly collapsing warehouse.

Another Big Talk once her friend wakes up, and the results convince her to, well. Truly try again despite the risks. This time, she’s determined to stay in the shadows, going out as an unmarked vigilante focused on the stuff more attention seeking superheroes wouldn’t care about. There’s a massive learning curve where she starts learning the limits of her new physiology, developing a fighting style, and even getting a costume after she somehow found herself recruited to work part-time at a boutique that totally wasn’t a front for a Hero Costume Crafter. She’s still terrified of exploring the full extent of her powers, especially since her friend flat out won’t say that her destroying the world is impossible, and for all their faults, Leon doesn’t Lie. But still, things are becoming better. College continues. The friend group grows from 2 to 5. She even finally figure out what she wants to do, that being social work.

Current

She’s now graduated, taking a gap year before applying to graduate school. Still living in that shitty apartment, still working at the boutique (though now full time). Other than that? The vigilante-ing continues, though she knows a choice has to be made soon. She’s already become known in the local neighborhood, even by some members of the superhero community that have been sworn to secrecy with the help of her boss. Words going to get out though, especially with her level of power. She needs to figure out what she wants to do with that aspect of her life. Bigger picture though? She wants to figure out exactly what she is, if she will inevitably become a danger because if so? Well. Here’s to hoping.

BACKGROUND

Coraline hails from a world much like ours, except there are superheroes and villains constantly fighting for control. Also magic, supernatural creatures, meta genes, and fantastical technology. Her story (like most people’s) starts at birth, where due to either fate or chance, she was stolen from the hospital to be used in a ritual meant to bring upon the end of the world as most knew it.

So, she ended up starting again. This time, as an unmarked vigilante focused on the stuff more attention seeking superheroes wouldn’t care about. There was definitely a learning curve, and she somehow found herself recruited to work part-time at a boutique that totally wasn’t a front for a Hero Costume Crafter, but… things were becoming okay again (ignoring some big hiccups).

She then graduated with a bachelor in social work.

Extended Background Here

PERSONALITY

At first glance, Coraline comes off as a rather shy and timid person.

ABILITIES

  • Darkness Manipulation: She can mold and change the properties of the darkness around her rather effortlessly. This allows novel ways of attacking, defending, and transportation through the use of her constructs. Touching the constructs gives others a shock of extreme cold that soon fades to just feeling wrong.

Said constructs are susceptible to light, as it causes them to dissolve away. Higher intensities of light require more concentration for her to maintain her constructs. She also can’t create darkness from nothing, requiring a source of some sort, but can “expand” an existing source.

With all of this, damage tends to build up quickly as the wounds aren’t actually healed, the shadows simply acting as a very effective band aid.

  • Regeneration: Coraline is capable of using darkness to heal herself, essentially using shadows to stitch herself back together, resetting her body to its “original” form. The speed of the process depends on the density of the ambient darkness. Greater damage also requires higher darkness density. It also strains at the magic binding her to reality, so healing greater amounts of damage is very uncomfortable and may leave her weak and incapacitated for some time after. Clothing is also not affected.

On the other hand, her traditional senses are now dulled or even completely lacking, the latter referring to her vision. She is unable to traditionally see things, fully relying on her new senses on that end. This means she’s basically colorblind and her “vision” acuity depends largely on ambient light levels (though she has found some work arounds when it comes to say walking down the street).

  • Teleportation: She can access the darkness between worlds and use it to get places. Requires full use of her senses in order not to get lost and since that’s usually sealed, this is sealed as well.

  • Dark Form: She is no longer bound to human form, able to turn into a living shadow that can become incorporeal at will. This greatly increases her “physical” capabilities, including her regeneration. On a lesser level, she is able to “meld” into existing shadows as a form of camouflage.

The tradeoff is that light becomes extremely dangerous in this form, causing extreme pain/discomfort. Enough exposure will kill her. She is also rather unwilling to use this ability and usually keeps it sealed off. The camouflage ability is easily disturbed by increased light.

  • General Skills: Coraline has been trained in martial arts (mostly wing chun and aikido based), making her a proficient hand to hand combatant. She is also capable in using the staff and glaive. She is skilled in parkour and has also learned basic first aid.

More ramblings here.

ITEMS

Choker: Posses an illusion charm that allows her to appear human/alive, as well as 3 levels of sealing spells.

First Impressions || Fellden

☗ First Impressions

✴ VISUAL: Stands at a height of 5'2". A bit too slim and delicate looking. Pale. Otherwise normal, though those particularly sensitive may notice her life signs are a bit... laggy.

With the illusion charm off: Skin is a dark grey with prominent black veins, especially in the eyes. Tends to give others a sense of instinctual wrongness. Has no life signs. However, she can usually pass for a normal human since she keeps herself covered up as detailed below.
✴ FASHION: Casual and dresses for comfort. As much skin covered as possible with as many layers as socially acceptable. Always has on sunglasses and a scarf/bandana pulled over the bottom half of her face during the day or when the illusion spell is off. Tends towards dark colors, especially black. Her usual outfit can be found here. Her Fellden fashion pinterest can be found here. Her supersuit can be found here.
✴ DEMEANOUR: Nervous and reserved, but friendly enough if approached. Her eyes show an inner strength and determination.
✴ SOUND: She has a rather generic American accent  with a slight Californian tinge. Tends towards loudness due to dulled hearing.
✴ SCENT: Human + clothing
✴ MENTAL INFORMATION: Most attempts to read her mind usually slide right off due to being a void creature, but strong enough magic may be able to break through. Feel free to talk to me about it!
✴ MAGICAL INFORMATION: Those that can sense supernatural stuff may just get a terrifying amount of Void from her, though it should be partially obscured by the illusion charm, which radiates magic and all that.

HISTORY: Coraline’s story starts at birth, where due to either fate or chance, she was stolen from the hospital to be used in a ritual meant to bring upon the end of the world as most knew it. Except she was saved. The police crashed in during the ritual, foiling their plans of summoning the Primordial Void through the baby sleeping in the middle of a spell diagram. The cultists were seemingly all captured and the kidnapped child was safe. So after the usual media circus that happens after such an event, life went on. Her single mother moved from New York to escape the attention and traumatizing memories, ending up across the country in Los Angeles. There, she had a perfectly normal childhood, her mother having hidden the circumstances around her birth. She attended school, was enrolled in extracurriculars such as dance, temporarily got an emotionally abusive almost-stepfather, and made friends. All the usual things.

Then, she turned 14. Turns out, the ritual did do something to her: It gave her powers. And being who she was, she decided she would become a superhero with them, joining the junior branch of her local superhero organization. Her attempts at heroics spread rumors, and those rumors soon gained the attention of the very same cult that had taken her on the day she was born. They stole her away once again, monologueing about her purpose in bringing the end of the world all the while. And this time, she died, sacrificed in an attempt to free the thing that had been put inside her.

They succeeded, the dark void within her bursting free and consuming her. The cult stood triumphant, and her best friend, who had been attempting to rescue her, watched her die. Except, nobody accounted for the possibility that maybe, the thing had merged with the human it had been put inside (or perhaps, there was never truly a person at all). So, she awakens as something distinctly inhuman and with the knowledge that she is something terrible. The cult had disappeared (with the help of a rather angry Friend), and with some reassurance from said friend, they decide to keep this a secret, doing their best to move on with their lives.

But of course it’s not that simple. From here, she withdrew into self-loathing and fear, absolutely terrified of what she’s become and what her powers now wildly out of control powers represent. She very nearly dropped out of school, fearful of her peers seeing what she’s become as well as the possibilities of hurting them. It was only after her best friend agreed to place a partial seal on her abilities that she deigned to go back. Still, she isolated herself the best she could, becoming even more withdrawn and quiet. Any free time was spent developing her powers, gaining as much control as possible so she didn’t accidently hurt anyone.

She craved normalcy, going so far as to enroll in college with an undeclared major despite a strong desire for complete self-isolation. Unknowingly, she is returning to her place of birth: New York City. Though not before one final fight between her and her mother that reveals the truth of her past. Despite her fear, her anger and defiance over secrets kept made her stay her path, and she becomes a student of NYU. Despite all attempts to stay away from the superhero community, she continued to be drawn in due to a mixture of coincidence and her simple desire to help.

Three year pass and some measure of equilibrium has now been reached. During the day, she’s a mild mannered psychology major hoping to use her experiences to help others. At night however (or more accurately after class) and between school work, she works part time at a small boutique that secretly caters to members of the superhero community and patrols the streets of New York. She continues to wrestle with her sense of self and existence, and just hopes that her actions can overcome her supposed nature.

PERSONALITY: Upon first meeting her, most people’s perceptions of Coraline is that she’s rather quiet. And indeed, there is a timid side to her due to years of emotional abuse as well as the events that have occurred. She can be rather anxious, fearing what others think of her as well as constantly doubting her own worth. So in situations where she doesn’t feel comfortable, she tends to be rather quiet, shrinking in on herself. Not to say she isn’t capable of interacting with others, years of practice and learning to compartmentalize allowing her to put on a happy face when necessary. Still, she also does her best to keep others at a certain distance to minimize the crossover between the two sides of her life and to prevent anyone she cares about from getting hurt.

She also possesses a deep vein of guilt and self-loathing, started by the above mentioned almost-stepfather emotional abuse as he constantly pointed out how much of a drain Coraline was to her mother. One would think her mom discovering said abuse and kicking the man out of their lives would have helped her, but it only deepened it, which revealed her self-sacrificing side. Despite her mother’s protests, she quit dance, devoting that time to doing chores at home. This only magnified with her resurrection of sorts, her sense of guilt now extending to the whole world. The way she sees it, the least she can do in exchange for existing is use her powers for good, no matter at what cost to herself.

Still, at her core, Coraline is a rather bright person so to speak, displaying massive amounts of curiosity and willingness to throw herself into her tasks to the point of obnoxiousness. She loves to learn new things and can be rather nosy about it. This combined with her intelligence makes her a bit of a jack of all trades. On the other hand, she can be rather stubborn in her opinions when she thinks she’s right. This also extends to her views of people. If you give her a bad first impression, it can take quite a bit of work for her to warm up to you. Or, if you give her a good one, she’s automatically more apt to trust and defend you. As one may expect, she veers towards book smarts rather than street smarts, and hence, doesn’t always have the best judgements on people and situations. Still, no matter how she thinks of you, any who try to push her past her limits will see that there is a hardness to her. Though uncovering that might take a while, as she’s willing to put up with quite a bit as to not “rock the boat” and draw attention to herself.

In the end though, she is someone who loves people and will do anything she can to protect them. She is very compassionate, finding great joy in helping others and making others happy. She is fiercely protective of those she loves, willing to go to the ends of the earth for them whether they deserve it or not. And despite flashes of pessimism due to her anxiety, in the end, she is an optimist at heart. Coraline truly believes in the overall good and endless potential of humanity with a rarely dampened ferocity and hopes to aid in the protection of that in all she does.

ABILITIES/SKILLS:
  • Darkness Manipulation: She can mold and change the properties of the darkness around her rather effortlessly. This allows rather novel ways of attacking, defending, and transportation through the use of her constructs. Said constructs are rather susceptible to light, as it causes them to dissolve away. Higher intensities of light require more concentration for her to maintain them. She also can’t create darkness from nothing, requiring a source of some sort. She is extremely unwilling to use her constructs on people unless absolutely necessary due to its unsettling qualities. Touching the constructs gives others a vague feeling of emptiness and the creations feel extremely cold.
  • Inhuman Physiology: Instead of blood and other liquids, what runs through her body can best be described as shadow stuff. Due to this, everything about her has a grey, blackish tint to it, belying her now inhuman nature. She can take much more damage than before due to an immunity to poisons and illnesses, a deadened sense of pain, and the ability to seal her wounds with darkness. She can also use the shadows within her body to augment her speed and strength.

With all of this, damage tends to build up quickly as the wounds aren’t actually healed, the shadows simply acting as a very effective band aid. The more damaged she becomes, the more she has to focus on holding herself together, weakening her other abilities. She is unable to heal herself, requiring outside healing to come back to full strength. And while she is hard to kill due to her abilities, enough damage will end her since she's still tied to her body. It just takes A Lot.

Moving on to things that more affect everyday life: she can no longer sleep and everyday sensations have become duller than before. She is also sensitive to the light, requiring her to keep herself covered up to avoid discomfort/pain. At night, she can usually uncover herself with little irritation provided the lights aren’t too bright. She also lacks a pulse, doesn’t breathe unless required for talking, and her body temperature is extremely cold. The illusion spell tied to her choker gives her life signs and projects warmth. On a finally note, it's extremely hard to read her mind.
  • Darkness Sense: She doesn’t have night vision really, more a highly precise and intuitive understanding of anything happening in shadows/darkness around them. The range is generally around 10 feet, though she can extend it with concentration. In continuous shadows/darkness, it can extend however far the darkness covers. Of course, that can very quickly become overwhelming, shutting her down mentally.
  • Dark Form: They are no longer bound to human form, able to turn into a living shadow that can become incorporeal at will. This greatly increases her abilities, but the tradeoff is that light becomes extremely deadly in this form. Any bright light is extremely painful, and enough exposure will kill her. This ability is also partially locked by the seal placed on her, and she can usually only discorporate a limb. Even when the seal is inactivated though, she is extremely unwilling to use this.
  • General Skills: Coraline has been trained in basic martial arts and the use of a staff in fighting. She is relatively skilled in parkour. She has also learned basic first aid and crucial phrases in Morse code/sign language.

INVENTORY/COMPANIONS:
  • Choker: Contains the spell giving her the illusion of life and a “normal” appearance. Is also tied to the partial seal on her abilities. So deactivating one means deactivating both.
  • Superhero Outfit: Image. There is some armor on common impact points, but overall, it’s just like blackout curtains with the normal durability of a tougher fabric.
  • Collapsible Staff
  • First Aid Kit
  • General: Her cellphone, some cash, sunglasses, a face mask, and house keys.

FACTION CHOICE: Court of Stars

REASON: While she may hesitate before decisions and actions due to her anxiety, in the end, she works off her gut. She tends to jump into situations without fully considering the consequences to herself. That and her more idealistic big picture beliefs I think makes her a great fit in the Court of Stars.

TATTOO: Crux, in a dark purple that’s nearly black. Located over her heart.

NOTES, QUESTIONS, COMMENTS: I’m going to go ahead and nerf her teleportation ability since it requires her to temporarily leave her current realm. I’m also going to make her unable to learn any additional magic besides possibly potion making. Feel free to suggest anymore changes!
